Recommendations: My Top 3 Favorite Mascaras

It's an undisputed fact that nothing pulls together an eye look like mascara, but there are a lot of mascaras out there to choose from. When picking a mascara, it's important to consider how much you want to spend and what you want your mascara to do. However, there are a couple of great mascaras that are always a good choice. Here are my top three favorite mascara recommendations:

Favorites:

Lash Domination by BareMinerals ($18): I am in love with BareMinerals as a brand! All of their products are great quality and Lash Domination mascara is no exception. The formula is great, but what makes this mascara special is the shape of the brush. The arrangement of the bristles gives you a ton of length -- which is what I look for when shopping for mascara. Granted, this isn't really a volumizing mascara, but you can give your lashes some extra umph by applying more than one coat. (If you really want volume though, I suggest Better than Sex mascara by Too Faced.) The twisting pattern of the bristles also seem to prevent clumping, which is always a priority. The actual formula is, in my opinion, a little heavy. However, it applies smoothly and evenly.

Better than Sex Mascara by Too Faced ($23): Too Faced is another of my favorite brands and they did a great job with this mascara. The formula is super light and it applies easily and evenly. Plus, the brush is narrower in the center, which seems to make it easier to get the lashes in the corners of your eyes, which is a challenge for most people. Compared to Lash Domination, this mascara is definitely more volumizing than lengthening.  The only thing I don't like about this mascara is that the bristles are super close together, which means it's easier to get clumps.

Perversion by Urban Decay ($22):  From my perspective, Perversion is the best of both worlds. Although the brush is nothing special, it's a great formula and it provides both volume and length. The formula is also super light weight and it also seems to be darker than other mascaras. Like Better than Sex though, it has a tendency to clump. Also, because of the shape of the brush, I find it really hard to get even coverage on the lashes in the corners of my eyes.

Low Cost Alternative:

Organic Wear Jumbo Mascara by Physicians Formula ($10): This is the best drugstore mascara I've ever tried. It's not clumpy or gloppy and it's decently volumizing and lengthening. Also, as an added bonus it's gentle for sensitive eyes and it's very easy to remove. My biggest criticism would be that it can be very drying and it doesn't apply super evenly. It also has a tendency to drop little flecks of black dust on your face as the day goes on. If you're interested in organic/ natural products, there's also a completely organic version of this mascara and a natural origin version. It also comes in two shades of black, for those of you that like to choose the intensity of your color.

Rise and Prime:

I don't think it's necessary to always use primer with mascara, especially if you buy high quality mascara. However, it does make a difference. In my experience, primer adds a lot of length to your lashes and does a great job of preventing clumping. I like to use primer when I want an extra dramatic eye look. If you have particularly short or thin lashes however, using primer on a daily basis would probably be a good idea. I haven't tried a ton of primers, however, my favorite thus far is Opening Act by Tarte ($22). It has a great, smooth formula and it applies easily and evenly.
