A Blue Highlighter? Reviews: Limelight Light Source Illuminating Highlighter by Lorac

Lorac--which is one of my favorite brands--recently released a collection called the Brunch Collection for Spring. Now, at first glance, this collection didn't really appeal to me that much. However, one of the more intriguing pieces in this collection is the I Love Brunch Light Source Illuminating Highlighter in the shade Limelight. Get this: It's a blue highlight. That's right, a blue highlight. I was super curious about it, and it is limited edition, so I thought "how can I pass that up?"

Anyway, I immediately raced over to Ulta.com and purchased the Limelight Highlighter. I watched a few reviews online, and everyone said that it was really brightening--especially on pale skin, which is clearly my MO--so I was very excited to try it out.

Before, I get too far into this review, I should probably tell you that this highlight retails for $23, which is the normal price for Lorac's highlights, and, as I said before, it is limited edition. As far as I know, Ulta is the only major retailer that sells Lorac products, so you can really only get this from Ulta or on Lorac's website.

Now, I've tried Lorac's highlights before, and, to be honest, I don't really like them. I have one of Lorac's original Light Source Illuminating Highlighter in the shade Starlight (which is described as white opal), and I hardly ever use it because it's just so "meh." Honestly, I don't even know why I bought it. I swatched them all, and I knew I didn't love it, but I bought it anyway because I thought "it's Lorac, of course I'll grow to love it." It's just nothing special. I suppose you could describe it as more of a "natural highlight," which would be fine, but even natural highlights have to have some pigment and some glow. Like, I can't even see this at all on my face when I put it on. My $7 highlight from Makeup Revolution is infinitely better.

Anyway, I disregarded all of that when I purchased this highlight. I had a completely open mind when I took it out of the box, and I was really really expecting to like it. Well, it breaks my heart to say that this product does not work for me.

I've found that you need to use a REALLY light hand with this product. If I use too much, my skin starts to look super ashy and grey. Maybe if I was dressing up as a zombie that would be a good look, but, for everyday looks, it's not my favorite. If I use a tiny amount of this highlight, it doesn't look grey or ashy, but it doesn't really do anything for my face either, and you can't really see the highlight at all. So, it's kind of a Catch 22 situation.

To be fair, I've seen pictures of people wearing this highlight, and it looks nice on them. I think it really depends on your skin tone and the look you pair with it. For example, this highlight would look really nice with a mermaid eye look. I also think this would look really nice on you if you have blue eyes; I think it would really make your eyes "pop." Even if this doesn't work as a highlight for you, you could also use this product as an inner corner highlight and an eyeshadow, which is what I usually use it for.

Long story short, this is a creative, interesting product. If you're into experimenting with makeup and doing creative, colorful looks, this would be a good thing to have in your collection. I'm glad that Lorac created this product because I applaud cosmetic companies that take some risks with their products. However, if you think you want to use it in everyday looks, you should really test it out in the store before buying it.

Final Rating: 6/10
