Review: Scalp Detox by Bumble and Bumble
I am a person that has trouble with my hair. I can't style it, I can't make it grow, and I can't handle it when it's humid; I just can't do anything with my hair. However, one of my biggest problems is that my hair is extremely dry, like Sahara dry. Because my hair is so dry, I don't wash it very often, which means that I get a lot of buildup on my scalp between washes. Most of the buildup is residue from hair care products, and it's really difficult to get off the scalp. I also co-wash my hair, which means that the products I use to clean my hair are extremely gentle and aren't designed to deep wash your scalp.
Anyway, I wanted to give you that background because I think it explains why I was so excited to learn about Bumble and Bumble's Scalp Detox. I saw the product for the first time when I was scrolling through Instagram one day, and I immediately thought "that's for me." Bumble and Bumble says that the product "removes buildup and impurities, gently cleanses, and refreshes" the scalp. That sounded like exactly what I needed, so, I went out right away, and bought the product.
Anyway, I've now used this product several times, and I have some thoughts about it. So, without further ado, let's get into the review.
Is it Worth the Money?
It was a rather expensive product; each 3.5 oz bottle is $34. That is ridiculously expensive; however, a little bit of product goes a long way, and it's probably not necessary to use it with every wash, so one bottle should last you for a long time. Also -- spoiler alert -- this product does work really well. So, if you're struggling with scalp buildup (like me), you'll probably find this product to be worth it.
How it Works/What it Does:
Every time I've used this product, I've followed the instructions (mostly), and I feel like that's given me good results. Bumble and Bumble recommends that you apply the product before showering, which makes sense because it would be quite difficult to apply in the shower. I typically work in sections, spraying the product onto my fingers, then rubbing it into the scalp. Bumble and Bumble recommends spraying it onto the scalp, but I find that I use too much product when I do that.
I think it's tempting to continue applying product until your scalp feels damp, but I don't think that's really necessary. The product is actually rather dry to the touch after it's been applied; so, even if your scalp feels dry, the product is actually on your scalp and is working. In reviews I've read of this product, a lot of people said that they used up almost half of the bottle in one use. I don't think that's necessary at all; a little bit of product really does go a long way, and I suspect that those people are using too much product.
When you touch the product with your fingers, you'll notice that it has a really strange texture. The product does foam when it comes out of the can, but it doesn't really feel like foam. I can best describe it by saying that this product fizzes. If you've ever eaten Pop Rocks, holding this product in your hand sounds and feels almost exactly the same way (I'm including a video of Pop Rocks sounds, in case you want to hear what they sound like). Really weird, right? Bumble and Bumble describes it as "tingly, zingy, and fizzy."
Even though the product does fizz, it doesn't really cause much sensation on the scalp. I've read several reviews in which people said that the product burned their scalps. I imagine that these people either have really sensitive skin or used way too much product. Personally, I felt almost nothing. It just gave my scalp a faint, tingling sensation.
Once you've applied the product to your scalp, you're supposed to leave it in for three minutes. After that, you can rinse it out and wash your hair normally.
Results:
Overall, this product gives me great results. In my experience, it does exactly what it says it's going to do, and it does it well (how often can you say that about a product?). Every time I've used this product, I've noticed that my scalp buildup is almost completely gone when I get out of the shower. Based on my very non-scientific observations, I would say that this product reduced the amount of buildup on my scalp by like 80%. It was most effective the first time I used it because, of course, I had a lot more buildup on my scalp at that time. The less buildup you have on your scalp, the less you'll notice the results of this product. However, in general, I've been really pleased with the way the Scalp Detox has performed.
Of course, this product doesn't prevent new product buildup from accumulating on your scalp, so you have to keep using it. Using it once every two weeks has been effective for me. It also doesn't prevent or really do anything about dandruff, so you'll have to use another product to treat that if it's a problem for you.
If you have issues with buildup or residue on your scalp, I HIGHLY recommend that you pick up this product. It does exactly what it says it's going to do, and it's really effective.
Final rating: 10/10
