Patriotic Manicure: 4th of July Inspired Nails

So, today, in honor of the 4th of July, I created a patriotic, red-white-and-blue manicure. I wanted to share it with you, even though I probably should have posted it a few days ago so that someone could actually have worn it for the 4th. Whatever, I don't plan ahead.

Anyway, this is a very simple manicure because I was in a bit of a rush today, and I didn't want to mess with anything complicated.

For this manicure, I used three polishes. You could use any red, white, and blue polishes for this manicure, but this is what I used:

1) Right Said Red by Sally Hansen
2) White On by Sally Hansen
3) Sailor by Zoya

When selecting your polishes, I advise picking a blue-toned red (as opposed to an orange or yellow toned red). A red polish that has too much orange in it will look wonky next to blue. Similarly, I advise choosing a nice, deep blue for your blue polish. I picked Zoya's Sailor because it's a lovely, dark navy. I advise avoiding light blue or robin egg blue; you won't get the same effect.

To start the manicure, I put down two coats of my base colors. For my base colors, I alternated between dark blue (Sailor) and white (White On).

Once that dried, I used my dotting tools to create a polka dot design. Using my largest dotting tool, I painted white dots (White On) over my blue base color. I wanted it to look a bit like the white stars on the blue background on the American flag. Using the same dotting tool, I painted red dots (using Right Said Red) over my white base color. Obviously, you should clean the dotting tool in between colors. To clean dotting tools, I simply dip them in nail polish remover and dry them with a tissue.

Once these dots are dry, paint over them with a glossy top coat. It's super important to make sure that the dots are 100% dry before putting on your top coat. I recommend waiting at least twenty minutes. If it's not completely dry before you put the top coat on, the design will smear.

Dotting Tools
Anyway, as you can tell, this is an extremely simple design, and you could easily alter it to suit your taste. For example, you could paint white dots on a red base color, or paint blue dots on a white base color.

Happy 4th of July!
