Review: Disney Designer Collection by ColourPop

When I first saw that ColourPop was coming out with a Disney collection, I forgot to breath for a few seconds. I was really that excited. I love ColourPop, and I love Disney; it was a match made in heaven. So, of course, I ordered a bunch of stuff from the collection as soon as it came out.

Obviously, this collection is kind of old news now. It's been out for a few months, which equals a few years in the world of makeup reviews. Unfortunately, I'm super behind with my palette reviews, which is why I'm just getting around to it now. However, all the stuff in this collection is still available to purchase on ColourPop's website, so I think this review still has the potential to be useful to some people.

Overall, I think this was a fairly well-round and well thought out collection, even if it wasn't terribly original. The shades of these products were fairly conventional (especially the eyeshadows and lipsticks), and I think a lot of makeup lovers probably have comparable products in their collections. But, let's me honest, this collection is more about the packaging than anything else.

For your reference, this collection contains:

  • 1 Pressed Powder Shadow Palette - $20
  • 2 Super Shock Highlighters - $8 each
  • 3 Ultra Glossy Lips - $6 each
  • 6 Super Shock Shadows - $5 each
  • 6 Crème Lux Lipstick - $7 each

Now that we've gotten the boring details out of the way,  let's get into the reviews:

It's a Princess Thing Eyeshadow Palette

Whenever a new makeup collection is released, it always seems like the eyeshadow palette sells out more quickly than everything else. I don't think it's any secret that most of the people who were interested in this collection were primarily interested in the eyeshadow palette (me included). I have a ton of eyeshadow palettes, but I would never say no to one more, and -- believe it or not -- I do use what I have.

Anyway, let's talk about the It's a Princess Thing palette. I don't think the color scheme of this palette is particularly original, and I probably wouldn't have purchased this palette if it wasn't from the Disney collection (just keeping it real). I imagine that most makeup lovers have shades like this in their collection already. So, there's probably no need to buy it if you're just interested in the shades and don't care about the Disney aspect at all. That being said, a lot of these shadows are very neutral, everyday shades, so I find myself reaching into this palette quite a bit when I'm getting ready for work. The purple shades in this palette are probably the most interesting shades in this palette, but they're not very pigmented, which diminishes their appeal.

However, aside from those purple shades, I think these shadows have really nice formulas. The mattes are nice and blendable, and the shimmers apply smoothly. I've had issues with the formulas of ColourPop's pressed shadows in the past, but these are high quality. Some shadows are more pigmented than others, but, in terms of formula, I have no real complaints.

Lipsticks

ColourPop is kind of known for their lip products (and boy to they have a lot of them), so it's no surprise that they released several lipsticks with this collection. I like a lot of ColourPop's lip products, but I have mixed feelings about the lipsticks. True, their packaging is always super cute, but I feel like the formula is kind of mediocre. I mean, even the creme lipsticks are on the dry side. In my opinion, there are better low cost lipsticks out there. That being said, I do have a several ColourPop lipsticks, and I do use them fairly regularly.

So, when I saw that the Disney Designer Collection had lipsticks, I knew I had to pick some up (I mean, on packaging alone, they're must haves). Each lipstick from the collection comes in a gold case decorated with the princesses' signatures, which is adorable. Each box (of course I kept all the boxes) is decorated with the "designer" drawing of that princess. They're absolutely beautiful.

Crème Lux Lipstick in Snow White - As a pale person with dark hair, I think Snow White is the Disney princess who looks the most like me.  Her movie is not my favorite because the witch scared me when I was a little kid, but I love her aesthetic overall. Of course, she's famous for her red lips, so her lipstick is bright red. I like red lipstick, but I was a little disappointed by this particular shade of red. I wish it was a little more blue-toned and less of an orange-red. Even so, I like red lips, so I'll definitely get a lot of use out of it.

Crème Lux Lipstick in Cinderella - Out of all the Disney Designer "looks," I think Cinderella's look is my favorite. Her dress is beautiful. I like her lipstick too. I went through a big pink lipstick phase a few months ago. I've taken a step back from pink recently, but I still love a good pink lipstick. Some reviewers said that the Cinderella shade was too bright, but I actually think it's fairly muted. It's not bubble-gum pink or anything like that. I think it's a very versatile and wearable shade, and I think a lot of people will enjoy it.

Crème Lux Lipstick in Ariel - Ariel's shade is described as "peachy beige nude," which I think is a shade that's going to appeal to a lot of people. I bought this lipstick because The Little Mermaid was my jam back in the day, but this sort of shade is not usually something I would pick up. These shades tend not to look good with my complexion. Even so, I'll definitely use this shade when I decide to do a warm-tone makeup look.

Crème Lux Lipstick in Belle - Out of all the shades I purchased, Belle's shade is definitely my favorite. It's described as a "rosy berry" shade, which is definitely right up my ally. I tend to find these shades very versatile, and I think it would be a great addition to many makeup collections.

Super Shock Shadows

The collection also contained a few of ColourPop's Super Shock Shadows. They released six, one for each princess. Super Shock Shadows are one of ColourPop's OG products; back in the day everyone was obsessed with them. In terms of formula, they're not really any different from the normal Super Shock Shadows, although the formula seems to vary from shade to shade. I picked up two of the Super Shock Shadows, so let's talk about them:

Super Shock Shadow in So This is Love - When I first tried ColourPop several years ago, I didn't really like or understand the Super Shock Shadows. I picked one up with my first ColourPop order, and I didn't like it at all. Anyway, when this collection rolled out, I decided that I might as well try the Super Shock Shadows again.

I'm glad I tried the Super Shock Shadows again because, as it turns out, I actually like them now. Usually, I apply the shadow with my finger, which seems to work best. They apply pretty easily with one swipe. I think the key is to not try to manipulate the shadows too much. If you try to blend them too much, they start to come off or cake up. Overall, however, I'm surprised by how much I like the super shock shadows.

One of the Super Shock Shadows I picked up was So This is Love. First of all, I love the shade name, which is a reference to a song from Cinderella, and Cinderella was one of my favorite Disney movies when I was little. ColourPop describes the shade as a "soft pink with a frosted finish." It's quite pigmented. It's a beautiful shadow, and I usually wear it all over the lid with a warm brown in the crease.

Super Shock Shadow in Heigh-Ho - The other Super Shock Shadow I picked up was Heigh-Ho. If you don't know, the name of the shadow is a reference to a song in Snow White.

This one has a formula that's slightly drier than So This is Love, but it still applies well. ColourPop describes this shade as an "ivory pearl sprinkled with multi-dimensional glitter." It seems to me that this shadow picks up the tones of whatever other shadows you apply. For example, I usually use a mauve shade in the crease with this shadow, and it makes Heigh-Ho pull more pinky-mauve.

I really like this shadow too, although So This is Love is my favorite for sure. This one is really eye catching. The glitter is really bright and beautiful.

So, to summarize, I think the Disney Designer Collection is a beautiful collection overall. It's not groundbreaking or unique in terms of shades and products, but each piece is beautifully packaged and the formulas are high quality. If you like Disney, and you like the shades that are offered, I think you'd love this collection.

Final rating: 8/10
