Review: Royal Affair Palette by BH Cosmetics
When The Royal Affair palette first came out a couple of months ago (I'm super behind on my reviewing, I know), my first thought was "wow, that's an interesting color scheme." For some reason, the shades in this palette really caught my attention. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't seen too many palettes with this sort of vibe.
BH Cosmetics eyeshadow palettes haven't worked out too well for me in the past, but I was inspired by this color scheme, so I decided to purchase it anyway. I picked it up at Ulta; it's no longer available at Ulta, but it is for sale on the BH Cosmetics website. I do think it's limited edition though, so, if you want to pick it up, you should go get it soon.
I've had it for a few months now, and I'm more than ready to review it, so let's get into it now:
First of all, let's talk about the packaging. I think the packaging is beautiful. It's very sturdy cardboard, and it seems like it would be durable and easy to travel with. It also has a mirror, which is nice touch, and the pans are fairly large. The packaging itself is decorated with this kind of colorful, abstract pattern that you can see in the photos, which I find to be very attractive. I don't think BH has always had the most attractive packaging in the past, but this one is really nice.
As I said above, I think the shade selection in this palette is really interesting. Honestly, I haven't seen any palettes that have this sort of vibe. The shades are very neutral, which I love (honestly, I'm getting tired of all these warm neutral palettes). However, neutral palettes tend to have a lot of shades of brown and gold and other "everyday" colors. I'm impressed with BH because they designed a palette that is neutral and also colorful. You've got some great pops of green and silver here, and there's a really nice matte pink shade. In my opinion, there aren't enough shimmer shades in this palette to create many complete looks. I would have liked to see one or two more shimmer shades in this palette.
Speaking of shimmer shades, I don't think the shimmer shades in this palette have the best formula. Overall, I've noticed that it's really tough to find high-quality shimmer shades from drugstore brands, even though drugstore brands tend to have good matte shades. This palette is no exception. The mattes in this palette are lovely; they're very pigmented and blendable and nice to work with. The shimmers on the other hand are a little dry and crumbly, and they don't seem to be as pigmented as the mattes. You really have to work to build up the shimmers. When I'm putting together looks, I find myself using the mattes and reaching for shimmers from other palettes.
Long story short, I'm glad I picked up this palette, and I'm definitely going to get a lot of use out of it. If you're interested in the color scheme, I would recommend picking it up before it's gone for good.
Final rating: 7/10
