Disappointing Products (Summer 2018)

It's been a while since I've written a "Disappointing Products" blog post, which is a good thing I suppose. In general, I'm patient with makeup and I'm usually able to make products work, so it's rare when something truly disappoints me. However, a few products have fallen flat for me over the past few months, so I'm going to take some time to talk about them. To misquote the Festivus airing of grievances: "I got a lot of problems with this makeup! And now you're gonna hear about it!"

Anyway, let's get into the disappointing products:

Lasting Finish 25 HR Breathable Long Wear Foundation by Rimmel London - I picked this foundation up at Walmart because I thought it looked interesting (and it was cheap); I was especially intrigued by its claim that it lasts 25 hours. I mean, I've seen foundations that claim to last 24 hours, but I figured that something that lasts 25 hours had to be something extra special. Unfortunately, it ended up being kind of disappointing to me. The foundation is super watery and runny, and it has very light coverage. It's not very long lasting either; I found that it started to fade and break up on my face after only about six hours. It didn't really do much for my skin either; I didn't find it to be very flattering on me. I also really dislike the packaging; the foundation comes with a doe foot applicator, which doesn't make much sense for a foundation in my opinion. Personally, I prefer pumps for foundations. I think I'm going to pass this foundation along to a friend who might like it more than I do.

Naturally Flawless Liquid Foundation by BH Cosmetics - I picked up this foundation on a whim, thinking that it had the potential to be a drugstore favorite for me. The packaging is classy, it has a pump, the shade range is pretty good, it only costs $8, and the description makes it sound appealing. BH says "this foundation provides lightweight, medium to full coverage and a natural satin finish." None of this is true. The coverage is light to nonexistent, and not in a cute way. I don't mind light coverage foundations if they flatter, the skin, but this looked like a tinted layer of grease on my skin. I say no evidence of anything natural or anything satin. The coverage was also very uneven; I found that it clung to some parts of my face and not others. Perhaps this foundation would be good for you if you have really dry skin. However, for me, this foundation is extremely unflattering. I think I'm going to have to use it as a mixing foundation in order to use it up.

Tea Tree Oil by The Body Shop - I picked up The Body Shop's Tea Tree Oil a while ago to deal with blemishes and pimples. I've been using it fairly consistently for months to treat blemishes, and it hasn't really done anything for me. I know that a lot of people swear by this product, but it's been totally ineffective for me. It just seems like an extra step in my skin care routine. I definitely won't be repurchasing this product.

Solar Flare Baked Eyeshadow Palette by BH Cosmetics - Apparently BH Cosmetics has been letting me down a lot lately. I picked up their Solar Flare Baked Eyeshadow Palette a few months ago, and I was immediately disappointed by it. When you look at the palette in person and in pictures, it looks like the palette is a mix greens, golds, pinkish shadows, and browns. In reality, however, almost all the shadows off as shimmery, warm toned bronzes on the skin. I'm just not about that color palette. The formula of the palette is fine; the shadows are decently pigmented and easy to apply. However, the actual colors of the shadows just aren't going to work for me. I was also disappointed to find out that the shadows look completely different on the skin and in the pan. I think I'll be passing this palette on to a friend.

Ultimate Multi-Finish Shadow Palette in Sugar High by NYX - I picked up this palette because I heard a lot of YouTubers raving about how great the NYX Multi-Finish palettes are. I picked up the Sugar High palette because I thought I'd get a lot of use out of the purple and pink shades. The shades themselves are pretty, but I'm disappointed by the actual formula of the shadows. They all (mattes and shimmers) seem to be quite dry and crumbly. They're also not very pigmented, and they're patchy when applied to the lids. I'm going to continue to try to work with these shadows, but I've been very disappointed thus far. I definitely won't be picking up any NYX shadows in the future.
