Review: Hyper Real Glow Palette: Flash + Awe by MAC
I'm not a huge highlight fiend, so—compared to the rest of my makeup collection—my collection of highlights is actually pretty small. However, when I saw the Hyper Real Glow Palettes by MAC, I knew I was going to have to pick one up.
It took me a while to get around to picking this palette up (because, you know, we live in the real world where you (unfortunately) can't buy all the makeup all the time). However, I eventually picked up the Flash + Awe palette, which is the more rose-toned one of the two palettes MAC release. The other palette they released is called Get It Glowin', which has some VERY gold shades. Each one has three shades and costs $39.50.
Anyway, I've had the Flash + Awe palette for several weeks now, and I'm ready to review it. These palettes have been out for quite a while, so I'm not going to be saying anything groundbreaking. However, I haven't seen too many people talking about these palettes online, so I thought I'd provide a review for anyone who hasn't heard of these palettes or is still on the fence about buying them.
Let's start by talking about the packaging. I think the packaging is simple but elegant, which is par for the course for MAC. The packaging itself is made out of cardboard, but it seems pretty sturdy, and I wouldn't be worried about traveling with it. It also has a mirror, which is a nice touch. Personally, I don't really use the mirrors in palettes, but I know it's a big attraction to a lot of people.
In terms of shade selection, I think the Flash + Awe palette is pretty great for people with fair to medium skin tones. There is a gold toned shade, a pinkish shade, and a white shade. They're all pretty natural on the skin; they're not blinding or glittery, but they give a beautiful, gentle glow. If you have a deeper skin tone, I think the Get It Glowin' palette would be a better option for you. It's tough to talk about shade selection when it comes to highlight palettes because it's almost impossible to create a palette that's going to be friendly to all skin tones. However, as I said, I think this shade selection is great for people with fair to medium skin tones.
Now, let's talk about the formula of the actual highlights. I'm a big fan of the formula. It's very smooth and buttery, which contributes to how natural it looks on the skin. As I said, the texture is very silky and it applies beautifully to the skin. There's very little kick back, and it doesn't emphasis the texture of your skin. It gives you a subtle, lit-from-within glow. It's not very pigmented, but it's easy to build up. I think this is the sort of formula that you'll love if you like highlights that are more subtle and natural. I think it would be very friendly to mature skin and skin with texture.
Final Rating: 8/10
