May: A Month of Nail Polish

Last month, I started a series of blog posts about the nail polish I wear every month. So, if you enjoyed embarking on a nail polish voyage with me last month, climb aboard the nail polish cruise ship with me.

Ladybird by Butter London and White Out by Sally Hansen - The first manicure I did this month was based on this tutorial I watched about how to create nail art hearts with dotting tools. As you can see, it worked out alright. I struggled a bit to make the hearts neat and they ended up looking a bit like Micky Mouse ears.

Black Out by Sally Hansen, Stardust by Butter London, and Petrol by Butter London - This manicure was inspired by Game of Thrones (which is back for Season 6, yay!). I wrote an entire blog about it, but, basically, I wanted to do something that was dark and vampy and inspired by the Night's Watch in Game of Thrones.

Honor by Zoya - I picked this polish up on a whim at Ulta (it was 50% off!) because I loved the color. As you can see, it's a gorgeous emerald green. This polish is actually from Zoya's Matte Velvet collection. However, I put a glossy top coat over it because 1) I don't currently have a matte top coat and 2) I don't really like matte polishes. Why did I buy a matte polish then? I honestly have no idea and no excuse, but I think it turned out well.

Sailor by Zoya and White Out by Sally Hansen - This was my graduation manicure! I graduated from Penn State on May 7th, so I decided to do a PSU inspired manicure. Penn State's colors are dark, navy blue and white, and our mascot is the Nittany Lion. So, for my manicure, I did a base coat of Zoya's Sailor (which is a perfect Penn State blue) and I did white paw prints for my accent nail.



Malaga Wine by OPI and Black Out by Sally Hansen - This is another Game of Thrones inspired nail look (are you sensing a theme here). I wrote a whole blog about it, so I won't go into too much detail. However, I will say that I used a simple gradient technique to achieve this look.


Candy Floss by Butter London - I did this manicure for my vacation (I went to Spain and Portugal, in case you're interested).  I choose this polish because I know that it's super, super chip resistant and I didn't want to worry about my nails while I was on vacation. This polish held up super well; it didn't chip at all for about five days, though I started to get significant flaking and cracking after that. In any case, this polish is a gorgeous, summer-y shade, and it has a wonderful formula.


Play Date by Essie - I picked this polish up on a whim at Ulta. It's a really fun, pink-toned purple; it sort of reminds me of an Easter Egg. I think it's a really cute color for Spring and Summer.

Okay. So, this is going to be an unusual blog post for me, but I feel that this palette --  Clay Play Face Shaping Palette Vol. 2 by Tarte -- needs to be addressed. Reviews: Gel Couture Nail Polish by Essie

So, if you're a nail polish junkie like me, you've probably heard of Essie's new line of Gel Couture polishes . I was really excited to try these polishes, so I picked one up a couple of weeks ago during Ulta's 20% off sale for Platinum members. In case you haven't heard, this line of polishes is being marketed as Essie's enhanced, long lasting, gel-but-not-gel line of polishes (similar to OPI's Infinite Shine 2 Lacquer line and Butter London's Patent Shine 10X Lacquer). Essie's Gel Couture is supposed to last up to 14 days without chipping, there is no light required, and it comes off with regular polish remover. It's also available in 42 shades , which gives you a good range of polishes to pick from. I have sort of mixed experience with these sorts of products; for example, I wasn't the biggest fan of OPI's Infinite Shine, but I love Butter London's Patent Shine. Ulta 21 Days of Beauty Haul

Some people say that the most wonderful time of the year is Christmas. I disagree. I think the most wonderful time of the year is the Ulta 21 Days of Beauty sale. It's just such an exciting and fun way to pick up and try different makeup and skin care products. Ulta's bi-annual 21 Days of Beauty sale just recently ended, and I picked up a lot of stuff--way more stuff than I should have, actually. Anyway, today we're going to do a good old-fashioned haul with the stuff that I picked up during the sale. Let's get into it! Double Duty Beauty Empowered Hybrid Gel Foundation by Tarte - I've been wanting to try this foundation for a long time. In fact, I think I've had my eye on it since the last 21 Days of Beauty sale. I swatched it in Ulta, and I was intrigued by the texture, so I've been dying to play with it. I have mixed thoughts about this foundation.
