Review: Brown Sugar Palette by ColourPop

Man, do I have a lot of ColourPop palette. I mean, I have a TON of ColourPop palettes. But, then again, ColourPop seems to release a new eyeshadow palette every couple of days, so it's petty easy to amass a giant ColourPop collection.

Recently, I picked up the Brown Sugar palette by ColourPop. Now, it's not a new product by any stretch of the imagination, but it does seem to be a permanent part of their line now, so I thought I'd review it in case anyone was considering picking it up.

First of all, I should tell you that this palette has nine shadows for $12, which is a great deal in my opinion. I really appreciate that ColourPop keeps things affordable. The only downside is that you have to buy most ColourPop products from their website, and you usually end up paying for shipping. There are some ColourPop products at Ulta, but I'm pretty sure this palette isn't one of those products.

The nine shades are as follows (descriptions from ColourPop's website):
  • Chai: matte soft yellow beige
  • Jamocha: matte mid-tone yellow brown
  • Amber: matte muted rust orange
  • Ginger: metallic golden peach
  • Auburn: metallic warm bronze
  • Sauté: metallic icy brown with a green and gold duochrome sheen
  • Sorrel: matte deep cool brown
  • Henna: matte charcoal brown
  • Choc: matte reddish brown

I also want to take a minute to talk about the packaging of this palette, which I think is super cute. ColourPop has two main types of packaging for their eyeshadow palettes. Most of their palettes are in cardboard, but their nine pan palettes are in hard plastic packaging, which I really like. Obviously, this palette has the hard plastic packaging, which is great. As I said above, I think this packaging is very appealing. It's slick and elegant, and it matches the shadows in the palette well.

Next, let's talk about the shade selection. I think this palette is really well thought out in terms of shade selection. This is a truly great warm-toned neutral palette with a few twists (like Sauté, the duochrome shadow). Now, you probably don't need this palette if you already have a bunch of neutral palettes (and who in the beauty community doesn't), but I'm one of those people who is always happy to add another neutral palette to my collection, especially one that is compact and easy to travel with.

Even though it is another neutral palette, I still think the shade selection is pretty spot on. You've got a nice selection of shimmers, a great transition shade, and a selection of darker shades to give your look more depth. My favorite shade is Sauté, as I mentioned above. It's a unique duochrome that manages to be unusual, but still wearable. I imagine that most people would be able to get a very pretty look out of this palette with minimal effort.

Now, let's chat about the formula. Most of you are probably pretty familiar with ColourPop's formula, so I don't feel like I need to talk about it too much. Most people seem to adore ColourPop's eyeshadow formula, and I like it a lot too. Although, I have to say that I've been disappointed by a few of their shadows in the past. Overall, however, I think this palette has great shadows. The shimmer shades are great: easy to apply and very pigmented. Some of the darker matte shades are a little patchy, but, overall, they're pigmented and easy to blend.

So, if you're in the market for a new neutral palette, I would highly recommend this palette.
