Disappointing Products of 2016
Some people feel bad about criticizing beauty products they didn't like. I am not one of those people.
Stay Matte Foundation by Rimmel London - I like to experiment with makeup, especially inexpensive makeup. Recently, I've been on a quest to find a really good drugstore foundation. This is not that foundation. This is an incredibly mediocre foundation. First of all, the coverage is not good. I mean, I suppose that some people prefer light coverage foundations; I'm not one of those people. If I wanted a light coverage foundation, I have my skin. Secondly, it starts to break up and crease around my chin and nose immediately. I'm going to try to use it up because I paid money for it, but I'm not happy about it.
Bamboo Finishing Kabuki Brush by EcoTools - A few months ago, I decided that I needed some new face brushes because my kabuki brush was getting really old and shed like crazy. However, I didn't want to spend a ton of money on new brushes so I decided to pick up a few face brushes by EcoTools. I got their kabuki brush and I don't like it at all. Kabuki brushes are supposed to have dense bristles. That's the point of kabuki brushes. This brush might be called a kabuki brush, but it is not a kabuki brush. It has the most sparse bristles of any brush I've ever owned. It is basically useless and doesn't pick up any powder. Plus, the handle is super thick and chunky, and it takes up too much space in my brush cup.
Bamboo Powder Brush by EcoTools - I bought this brush at the same time I bought the EcoTools kabuki brush, and I don't like it. It's supposed to be a powder brush, but it's basically flat so it doesn't pick up much powder. Like, usually powder brushes are round and sort of flat, right? This brush isn't. It's sort of shaped like a paddle brush, but it's not stiff enough to be a paddle brush (if that makes sense). Long story short, it's really tough to apply powder with this powder brush, therefore I find it useless.
Holographic Stick in Supernova by Milk Makeup - I wrote a complete review of this product a few months ago. Long story short, this cream highlight was dry, patchy, and decidedly un-creamy. Plus, the packaging sucks. I found it extremely disappointing, especially since it is a fairly expensive product ($28). Honestly, how hard is it to make a cream highlight? Colourpop does it easily for a fraction of the price.
Cactus Water Makeup Removing Wipes by Pacifica - Earlier this year, I decided to try out the brand Pacifica. I was extremely disappointed. These wipes were not good at all. They didn't remove makeup very well. They were rough in texture. They were dry, and they were awkwardly small. They also have a weird smell. I used these wipes up because I spent money on them, but I was quite happy when they were gone.
Dragon Tamer Invisible Anti-Frizz Serum by Pacifica - This is another disappointing Pacifica product. First of all, this product doesn't do what it says it does. It does not smooth hair. On the contrary, it leaves a sort of sticky, rough residue in my hair. Also, because of the packaging, it makes a huge mess whenever you try to use it, and it spills everywhere. I really wanted to like this product, but I found it to be extremely disappointing.
Even-Touch Powder Foundation by Milani - I'm a big fan of powder foundations, and I frequently use powder foundations on a daily basis. However, I have yet to find a drug store (or, at least, a drug store priced foundation) powder foundation that works for me. I picked this foundation up at Wal-Mart because I like Milani products, and I thought this foundation might work for me. Unfortunately, I was wrong. This foundation is incredibly mediocre. I get that this is a cheap, drug store product, so I can't expect too much from it. However, I wanted it to be better than it was. The coverage isn't good, and it doesn't blend very well on the skin. It very much looks like powder sitting on top of your skin, which isn't pretty or flattering. Sometimes, I mix this powder with other powder foundations, but I don't really like it on its own.
Fit Me Matte + Poreless Powder by Maybelline - I picked up this powder because (once again) I'm currently on the hunt for a cheap powder foundation. I liked this one better than Milani's powder foundation. However, I was still disappointed with this powder overall. The coverage is supposed to be buildable, but, to be honest, it doesn't seem to build up very well at all. It just ends up being very sheer, and it doesn't really do anything for my skin. Sometimes I layer it over my other powder foundations, but it doesn't really look good when you wear it alone.
Light Source Illuminating Highlighter by Lorac - I really wanted to love this product, I really did. I bought it during the Ulta 21 Days of Beauty (I think it was 50% off). However, it was just so blah. I mean, it wasn't terrible or anything; it was just very mediocre. This highlight just doesn't do anything for me. You really have to pile it on the skin in order to get any sort of glow, and even then it's just meh. Just to be clear, I have my highlighter in the shade Star Light. I'm not sure if the other shades are any better, but I'm not really willing to take the chance. If this was a cheap highlighter from a drug store brand, I would be okay with that, but Lorac is a high end brand and this is an expensive product. I expect better.
To Reflect Shimmer Palette by Wet n' Wild - There are a lot of things Wet n' Wild does well (brushes, nail polish, concealer, etc.). Highlighters, however, are not one of those things. I've purchased several Wet n' Wild highlighters, and they've all been incredibly subpar. I bought this particular highlight, the To Reflect Shimmer Palette in the shade I'll Have A Cosmo, because I heard good things about the Boozy Brunch highlight, but I thought it was a little dark for me. However, this highlight has absolutely no pigmentation whatsoever. Basically, it just looks like glitter on the skin, but it's not even very glittery. Does that make sense? It's just very meh.
Oil Absorbing Rice Powder by Palladio - I don't actually have a problem with this product. It's actually a really good setting powder, and it makes your skin look gorgeous and flawless. I just really, really hate the packaging. First of all, I think the picture on the box is a little bit racist and it makes me a little uncomfortable to look at it. Secondly, the product is in this weird cardboard box and the lid is attached to the box. Usually, I pour powders into their lids to use them, so it really annoys me that the lid is attached. Color me disappointed.
Anyway, those were some of the products that I found to be disappointing this year. To be clear, I'm not trying to be mean or to put anyone down who likes these products. I'm just giving you my honest thoughts about these products so that you can be an informed consumer if you ever want to buy any of these products.
